What is Fluency?
Reading fluency is the ability to read with accuracy, speed, and expression, and to understand the text. It's a key component of learning to read and is necessary for comprehension and motivation.
Reading fluency is made up of three main components:
Accuracy: Reading words correctly
Rate: The speed of word identification, usually recorded as words read per minute
Prosody: The sound of the reading, or expression used when reading
Fluent readers can focus on comprehension and deeper understanding of the content. They can read phrases and add in proper intonation when needed, making their reading smooth and expressive.
