Early Literacy

As seen in the video, early literacy refers to the exposure of the different written materials, elements and units of writing from young ages to create a connection between kids and reading. This connection is important for them to have a long term attachment to the different texts to be encountered during their lives.

Based on the video and from text exploration, we recommend parents, tutors and caregivers the following advices.

  • Read Aloud Every Day: Make storytime a daily habit. Ask questions and let kids predict what happens next.
  • Play with Sounds: Use rhymes, songs, and sound games to help kids notice sounds in words.
  • Encourage Storytelling: Let kids re-tell stories or make up their own using puppets or toys.
  • Build Vocabulary: Talk a lot! Describe things and ask open-ended questions to expand their language.
  • Create a Print-Rich Space: Label items and use posters so kids see words everywhere.
  • Introduce the Alphabet: Use magnetic letters, songs, and letter games to help kids recognize letters.
  • Strengthen Fine Motor Skills: Activities like drawing or building blocks help kids prepare for writing.
  • Involve Families: Send books home and encourage parents to read with their children.
